What exactly is KINGSIDE? Who can benefit from the program? How does the department use it? Great questions!
At its core, KINGSIDE is a program built to support firefighters and first responders on their health, recovery and longevity journey. It is built on foundational kinesiology and exercise science principles for functional athletes. It leverages a biometric monitor (Kingside Strap) to gather individual data on activity, recovery and sleep. The firefighter or first responder gets access to an iOS / Android app that uses that data to help coach them each day as well as provides daily fitness programming. The department gets a command-level dashboard of realtime, aggregate workforce data to help support the front line in their readiness and recovery.
USE CASES
This is the tenured firefighter who is looking to continue or enhance his or her job performance while balancing longevity and recovery.
The career firefighter has fitness and performance goals but may or may not have a defined or consistent plan of how to achieve them. They are happy to work out but might need some motivation from peers or a program/application to inspire them.
This firefighter may also have fallen into a routine that has left them stagnant, neither progressing nor digressing.
SOLUTION: KINGSIDE provides daily programming that focuses on functional, real-world movement to promote strength and cardiovascular health that matches the demands of the fire-ground while simultaneously boosting stretching and injury prevention for longterm recovery and longevity.
The new-to-the-line firefighter is learning first-hand about the physical and mental demands of the job and is establishing a performance baseline.
This firefighter is often very motivated and physically capable but may not have the tools or experience to adequately recover and balance their physical output.
The unique physiological requirements of shift work, layered on top of a physically-demanding job, can also be a challenge for newer members to settle into.
SOLUTION: KINGSIDE provides clinical-grade biometric data, coupled with personalized insights and recommendations, to help individuals tailor their activity, recovery and sleep. The department gets aggregate data, filterable down to select groups (such as probationary members) to ensure these members are receiving the physiological and mental support they need as they learn the job.
The company officer (or firefighter of any rank!) who has only a year or two until retirement is a unique employee. Traditionally, this firefighter has “been there, done that” and is focused on longevity and personal health and wellness.
This employee typically is seeing a performance or recovery decline as their age creeps up and the toll of years of shift work sets in. This employee also probably has a health routine that may or may not be actively supporting their goals. The retiring firefighter still likely wants to set a good example for new members.
SOLUTION: KINGSIDE provides whole-person wellness plans, with customized and personalized coaching for specific needs and injury prevention and rehabilitation. The daily programming, while intended to be performed as a crew, is designed to be scalable to individuals, with movement modifications easily implemented in the app.
